What to Wear for Your Cake Smash & Splash
A styling roadmap crafted for editorial results. Follow it as a starting point — we'll refine every look together on your pre-session call.

Baby will wear our client-closet outfit for portraits at the start (bloomers, tulle skirt, or linen romper in cream/blush).

For the smash itself: a simple diaper cover, tulle skirt, or nothing at all photographs most beautifully. Nothing that stains white icing.

For the splash portion, we provide fluffy ivory towels — you don't need to bring anything.

Parents: if you're jumping into a few portraits, wear cream, blush, or camel. Skip white so baby stands out.

Bring a warm change of clothes for baby for the ride home.
Baby Prep Guide
Preparing Baby for the Session
The little things that turn a great session into an heirloom. Read through this the week before we shoot — a settled baby is the secret to every image.
Feed baby a normal meal about 60–90 minutes before the session — not right before or they won't be interested in the cake.
Skip a long morning nap so baby arrives happy and awake but not overtired. Best sessions run mid-morning after a solid breakfast + short nap.
Introduce baby to frosting at home in the days before if they've never had sugar. A tiny taste on a spoon helps them not be startled by the texture.
Order a soft buttercream smash cake (not fondant) — soft icing photographs beautifully and squishes for the smash. Order the cake from a local bakery or ask us for a recommendation; we include a partner discount.
Trim baby's fingernails the night before so they don't scratch themselves during the smash.
Bring a favorite toy or lovey for the portrait set at the start — it helps baby settle in.
Pack a full change of clothes for baby, a warm bottle or sippy of milk/water, and any comfort item for the ride home.
For the splash: bring baby's favorite bath toy if it helps them feel at ease. We provide the tub, warm water, and fluffy ivory towels.
If baby is sick, teething badly, or refusing solids the week of — text us. We reschedule without penalty because a happy baby makes the session.

Good to Know
Do you provide the cake?
We coordinate with a local partner bakery and include a client discount, or you can bring your own soft-buttercream smash cake.
What age is best?
Between 11 and 13 months — old enough to sit unassisted and interact with the cake.
Is the splash included?
Yes. The Smash & Splash includes both sets in a single 60–75 minute session.
